Gary Bogle, President Rebecca Brashier, Past president Gary Paulson, President elect Anita Hull, Treasurer Diana Davidson, Secretary Tom Donaldson, Editor MINUTES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING
FINANCIAL MATTERS
2) Gary Bogle requested $750 in support of his attending the MENC Eastern Division Conference. The board approved this expense, pending availability of funds. This will be determined by the end of November, following journal expenses. 3) The board discussed the possibility of supporting five students who are slated to attend the honor groups performing at the Eastern Division Conference. It was decided we do not have the funds for this. EMEA could provide students with a letter requesting financial support from community organizations. EMEA's backing might help students solicit support. It was suggested students could offer to perform in return for financial support. Diana will draft the letter. 4) There was a brief discussion regarding developing scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to study music education. However, our organization has limited funds. It was decided we should spend our money to support our European music educator needs. 5) As a small way of recognizing the hard work involved in setting up a conference, it was decided to exempt the president from the conference fee. It was agreed to also exempt Tom Donaldson, since he was instrumental in setting up this conference. NEW OFFICERS
Elections will be held tomorrow during the conference with a hand vote. AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
2) Gary Paulson has agreed to contact Eric Measells to see if he is still interested in chairing the choral area. If not, he will ask John Bockman to consider the position. 3) The board decided we should include the chairpersons in board meetings. Gary Bogle will call them together tomorrow morning to let them know about attending board meetings. Tom Donaldson will request articles from each person for the next EMEA Journal. 4) Diana Davidson has agreed to be an assistant editor for the EMEA Newsletters and Journal. DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSONS
MISCELLANEOUS
2) We need to continue sending EMEA publications to non-members; hopefully, non-members will realize the importance of joining EMEA/MENC. 3) In August, 1999, there will be a procedure EMEA must take in order to retain our non-profit status. 4) We discussed making the fall meeting informal; and the spring conference a "major" conference. We decided we need to continue with agendas at both conferences. 5) We discussed the lack of music teachers from Italy attending conferences. We need to be in close communication with them and encourage attendance. It’s very difficult for teachers in other districts to attend. 6) Gary Bogle will ask Marie McGurn to write a letter to principals reporting briefly on our conference. We see this as a way to increase awareness of EMEA and music education and to promote music education. 7) We decided to send letters to presenters and students who participated in the fall conference. 8) Spring, 1999, conference will be in Garmisch. Fall 1999 conference
will be in Heidelberg.
The meeting was adjourned with just enough time to get to the restaurant for a wonderful dinner with 30+ members attending. Members at one table were terribly rowdy, however. Keep an eye out for the next dinner party! |
