Greetings from your editor: I’m happy to be able to bring this journal to you, even though it is later than I’d hoped. By the time you get this, the school year will be well under way. Most of you have already had a fall concert and are getting ready for your winter concert. I hope you’re taking every opportunity to advocate the importance of music in your school: with parents, administrators and your teaching colleaguesas MENC president, June Hinckley calls them, the “gate keepers.” Also, take time to speak at your PTSA and SAC meetings, write articles for the school’s newsletter, develop a music room web site and invite parents to sit in on your classes. If you need material, check out the EMEA web site at: http://www.hartline.net/EMEA. Thanks to Bob Hartline for developing, maintaining and hosting the site. If you’d like something else included contact Bob or me. If you didn’t attend the EMEA conference in Amberg, Germany, you missed another outstanding opportunity to learn. EMEA president, Gary Bogle, put together a fantastic conference. His efforts are much applauded. Look for articles in this issue which tell of some of the presentations. Isn’t it time that you get involved in your music organization? EMEA/MENC provide many advantages to you, the struggling music teacher. By joining the European music teachers and 70,000 other music teachers in the states, your voice carries much more importance than by working alone. Act now! Call an EMEA board member to find out how to join. I’m happy to announce that Diana Davidson has agreed to help me with the job of editing this journal. I look forward to her expertise and hard work. Thanks, Diana! Before the fall conference, I wrote to Elizabeth Lazko, the person in charge of making MENC logos, asking her to do something a little different with the logo to make it more appealing to EMEA members. Make Music America is real catchy but many EMEA members felt that there was just a little something missing. A few days before the conference she wrote back saying all she could do was to add European Music Educators Association to the bottom. She and her team had no other ideas or options. During a general session at the conference, I was discussing the logo and telling the above story. Jim Allen piped up and said, “Well, how about Make Music America...and beyond!” I wrote back to Elizabeth and her team and in a week I had the new logo! Kudos to Jim for the idea and kudos to Elizabeth Lazko and MENC for the support! You can see the logo at the EMEA home page. |
